Transepidermal Water Loss: Why It Matters

Transepidermal water loss — TEWL — is one of the most important measurements in skincare science, and one of the least discussed in consumer skincare. Here is what it means and why it matters.

The skin loses water constantly. Not through sweating, which is an active process, but through passive diffusion — water molecules moving through the skin layers from the wetter interior of the body toward the drier exterior environment. This is transepidermal water loss. It happens all the time, in every person, regardless of hydration or climate.

In healthy skin with an intact barrier, TEWL is low. The lipid matrix of the stratum corneum — the ceramides, fatty acids, and cholesterol that fill the spaces between corneocytes — slows this diffusion to a manageable rate. The skin feels comfortable, retains moisture well, and responds normally to the environment.

When the barrier is compromised — through over-cleansing, chemical irritants, UV damage, or conditions like eczema — TEWL increases. Water escapes more rapidly. The skin feels tight, dry, and reactive. Products that were previously tolerated may begin to cause irritation, because the barrier that was moderating their penetration is no longer functioning.

This is why the first response to any skin concern — dryness, sensitivity, reactivity — should be barrier support rather than the introduction of more actives. An active ingredient applied to a high-TEWL skin barrier penetrates differently, behaves differently, and is more likely to cause a reaction than the same ingredient applied to an intact barrier.

Occlusives reduce TEWL by forming a physical layer on the skin surface that slows water diffusion. This is the primary function of the beeswax in our balms. Emollients like squalane and meadowfoam seed oil support the barrier lipids themselves, addressing the underlying cause of elevated TEWL rather than just slowing its rate.

Understanding TEWL changes how you think about skincare. It’s not about adding moisture. It’s about stopping it from leaving.
