A newborn's skin looks perfect — but it's still learning how to protect itself. In the first months and years, baby skin is thinner and more permeable than adult skin, and its barrier is still developing. That means it loses moisture more quickly, and it's more easily irritated by things grown-up skin would shrug off.
What makes baby skin different
Three things, mostly. It's thinner, so it absorbs more of whatever you put on it. It holds water less well, so it dries out faster. And its protective barrier is still immature, so fragrance, harsh cleansers and unnecessary additives are more likely to cause redness or irritation.
What that means for what you choose
Simple is safer. Look for short, purposeful ingredient lists and, above all, no added fragrance — fragrance and essential oils are among the most common causes of irritation for delicate skin. A gentle oil or balm that nourishes and helps seal in moisture is usually all a baby's skin needs.
A gentle everyday approach
After a bath, while skin is still slightly damp, massage in a few drops of a light oil to replenish moisture. For drier patches — cheeks, elbows, the nappy area — follow with a little balm to seal and protect. Always patch test a new product first, and check with your healthcare professional if your baby has a skin condition.
This is exactly what we made Halo for: fragrance-free, thoughtfully formulated care that's gentle enough for a newborn to adult and simple enough to trust, every day.
