Every Oath Co collection contains two products: an oil and a balm. This is not an accident of product development. It reflects a deliberate decision about what these two formats do, and how they do different things.
What an oil does.
An oil is a penetrating formula. Its primary job is to deliver active and barrier-supporting ingredients into the stratum corneum — the outermost layer of the skin — where they can do their work.
The oils in the Oath Co range are built around squalane and meadowfoam seed oil: two ingredients chosen for their compatibility with skin lipids and their absorption profile. Applied to clean, slightly damp skin, they absorb within a few minutes and begin delivering their active ingredients — bakuchiol, niacinamide, centella asiatica, or bisabolol, depending on the collection — directly into the skin.
An oil used alone is a complete skincare step. Most skin types, most of the time, don’t need anything more than a well-formulated oil applied morning and evening.
What a balm does.
A balm is a protective formula. Its primary job is to create a flexible occlusive layer on the skin surface that slows transepidermal water loss — the passive evaporation of water through the skin — while the skin’s own barrier repair processes work underneath.
The beeswax base in Oath Co balms melts on contact and absorbs without leaving a film, but it creates enough of a surface layer to measurably slow water loss. The shea butter in Arc and Ember balms adds additional emolliency for skin that needs sustained comfort. The active ingredients in each balm — the same collection-specific actives as the oil — continue working through the night, supported by the occlusive environment the beeswax creates.
A balm used alone on very dry or stressed skin is also effective. But it works best as a second step, applied over the oil.
Why they work better together.
Oil first, balm second. The oil delivers; the balm protects. The oil provides the lipids and actives; the balm slows the rate at which they leave.
Think of it as a two-part system: the oil is the active step, the balm is the protective step. Used consistently together, morning and evening, they provide more complete barrier support than either can alone.
How to choose.
If you’re starting out, begin with the oil. It’s the more versatile product and the foundation of the ritual. Add the balm when you want more intensive support — in the evening, during periods of stress or dryness, or anywhere skin needs sustained protection.
If you want both from the start, or if you’re buying as a gift, the Ritual Sets pair the oil and balm from each collection at a saving. Not sure which collection to start with? Our Find Your Collection guide will help.
