Fragrance-free skincare has a perception problem. People assume it means the product smells bad, or clinical, or like nothing at all in an unsettling way. They assume it’s a compromise — something you choose because your skin is broken, not because you’re being considered.
We’d like to push back on that.
Fragrance-free doesn’t mean smell-free. Every botanical oil has a character — a faint earthiness, a subtle warmth, something that speaks to where it came from. A well-formulated fragrance-free product smells like its ingredients. And if those ingredients are good, that’s not a small thing.
What fragrance-free does mean is that we haven’t added anything whose sole purpose is to make the product more appealing to smell. Fragrance in skincare — whether synthetic or natural, whether listed as ‘parfum’ or ‘essential oil’ — is one of the most common causes of contact dermatitis and skin sensitisation. It doesn’t discriminate between ‘clean’ and ‘conventional’. Lavender essential oil is as capable of causing a reaction as a synthetic fragrance compound.
We decided early on that we wouldn’t ask your skin to manage something it doesn’t need. The products would be built around what the skin requires, not around what makes the unboxing experience feel more luxurious.
We think that is luxury. The kind that lasts.
